Meet the Crew
We met in college. We've been packing ever since.
Karen was born and raised in England, which meant that from the time she was small, "going to see family" involved a passport. Trips back to Illinois to see relatives. Weekends in France and Spain and Italy that most Americans save up years for. Travel wasn't a special occasion in her house; it was just how her family worked.
Then she met Nick in college, and the two of us did what young couples with no money and no sense do: we loaded up a car and moved across the country together. That was the first of our big adventures, and honestly, we've never really stopped.
The attacks of 9/11 upended everything. Nick felt a calling to serve so he joined an Army at war, and to her credit, Karen never hesitated or waivered in her support. What was supposed to be a single tour stretched into 20 years. Two decades of constant motion. Different states, different countries, different time zones, more moves than we can reconstruct without going back and looking at pictures.
Somewhere in the middle of all of it, we picked up a conviction that has never left us: a trip is only as good as the person who planned it. We've had glorious ones. We've also had the other kind, the ones where the transfer never showed, the room faced the parking lot, and the "beachfront" resort was a fifteen-minute walk from a beach.
You learn something from every experience, but the bad ones taught us more than the good ones.
Karen spent her career as an event planner. That means years of being the person responsible when people need to be in the right place, fed, happy, and on schedule, and being the only one in the room who knows how close it came to going sideways.
After spending his first ten years as an Armor officer, Nick finished his Army career as a strategic planner. Same skillset as Karen with different stakes: look at something complicated, figure out what matters, build a plan that survives contact with reality, and have a backup ready for the parts that won't.
Put those two together and you get people who read the fine print, ask the resort the question you didn't know to ask, and notice that your connection in Miami has a fifty-minute layover in a terminal that needs ninety.
You shouldn't have to become an expert to enjoy a vacation. That's what we're for.

Over the last quarter century, we’ve spent a lot of that time apart. Deployments, training rotations, business trips…all long stretches where you're both doing your jobs and the marriage is running on maintenance mode. What we learned, the hard way and more than once, is that reconnecting doesn't just happen because you're finally in the same house again. It really helps to go somewhere. Somewhere you can leave the laundry and the calendar and the noise behind and just be two people again instead of two schedules.
You don't need a deployment to know that feeling. A hard year at work will do it. A sick parent. Small kids. Life gets loud, and the two of you get quiet with each other without ever deciding to or even realizing it was happening.
